Sanjay Manjrekar

Sri Lanka v India, 1st Test, SSC, Colombo, 3rd day

Sanjay Manjrekar: 'India's batsmen lacked confidence'

July 25, 2008

"One got the feeling the Indian batsmen weren't as relaxed and confident as they normally are. There was a great deal of uncertainty among all of them except perhaps Sachin Tendulkar, when he started his innings." Sanjay Manjrekar analyses the third day's action in Colombo

Indian batsmen have shown zero application and determination. Look at how South Africa saved the first Test against England, gained confidence from it, and drubbed them in the second Test. Big names don't get us anything. Their experience should show when it matters. What a horrible innings defeat.

i completely agree with davesh. some srilankan fans took an extra liberty saying that srilanka is better side. come on mates, this is the first innings of the first match of this series. don't post preconceived idea on this site. in the last two srilanka drew a series against england, west indies but India won it. India dominated the most part of the last two series they had played in Australia.so the question of srilanka being the better doesn't arise at all.try to be realistic and don't judge the quality of Indian batsmen by one innings.

Hi guys dont get carried away with the first test match result... Its going to be Srilanka, and it might be an innings defeat. With so many unconventional bowlers(by heaven sake malinga is not in team and that would make 3 out of 4) the srilankan team has, it is not easy to pick them up in their early matches. Murali is a class bowler though. Anil kumble was more successful in his earlier days bcoz the opponent batsmen were not used to playing his kind of unconventional bowling. Same thing goes to Mendis. Indians are prone to relax in their first venture. I bet it is not going to be as easy as it is now to beat the Indians during the rest of the series. If u think Srilankans are much better side, we saw that in the neutral venue in Australia recently. And mendis magic will not last long, as these tricks can be picked sooner or later. Jayawardena knows that and that's why he didnt pick him in the Asia cup league match against India. Dont get carried away guys.....

First of all you all should understand this is Test Match. We were fielding for 2 1/2 days and then came into batting. Because of first innings performance you cannot predict the match. Test match is always spin form one to another. We too win or draw matches form the behind. We should believe the team. If you are focus the 'M's and Fab Four means they are not responsible for you. They show their responsibility in the past. Thats why we believe them. Be patient. Lets hope India's Come back. For Drawing this match, Shewag should play more patiently but his second innings average is worry for all. Only Dravid has better 2nd innings average. India will definetly come back.

The Indian team has lost 6 wickets in less than two sessions. So it is unlikely they will last another 6 sessions. Maybe the rain gods will favor India :-) The Indian team looked a little underprepared from the start. I think they should have played at least one more warm up match before. There is no doubt India has been outplayed so far. But Indians should try to prolong their innings as much as possible. It will do two things. First, it will allow them better look at Murali and Mendis. Also it will allow them to build momentum for the next test. Who will be Man of the Match: Murali or Mendis? I'll go with Murali.

somehow I dont understand you people arriving at conclusions after half the test match...........Indians have always started their overseas tours very badly(the australian tour a case in point).Srilankans are a far more disciplined team than india and they are better at home than the indians nowadays(except that when the aussies arrive they tumble). The most important thing for the indians I suppose is their approach.Indians have been notoriously poor match defenders and the negative approach doesnt work for them.It would be interesting to see how the lankan spinners fare once india gets off to a big opening stand.Things get different for the indian batsmen once that occurs.at the end of this tour may be we can stamp labels on everyone of them

The truth of the matter is that Anil Kumble and Harbajhan Singh are totally in effective outside India(that too they need vicious turning tracks). It is high time India said good bye to Anil Kumble, he has had a great career, but all good things must come to an end. Why dont we try Amit Mishra instead of always playing Piyush Chawla who is still not experienced enough. I am sure there must be plenty of off spinners in the domestic circuit who could be given a chance T.V. Subramaniam

Mr. Manjekar it is a very sad situaton for you. you are very bias in some areas. you always think that india is the better side. get out of the shell man. how many times do we have to beat you to prove that we are the better side than you? look at your side. you just have "BIG NAMES" on your side. not the best players at the moment. compare your side and the Srilankan side. Sehwag vs Warnapura, Sanka vs Dravid, Mahela vs Sachin, Ganguly vs Thilan, Laxman vs Dilshan. u always say that Srilanka depend only on Sanga and Mahela when batting. But i think our players made a point yesterday by beating your balling. Admit one fact Mr. Manjekar, Srilanka is the better side. Don't just bluff cz u have big names. dont blame the pitch, dont tell its preasure. if your middle order cant handle the preasure from our young side its a shame. dont forget that we scored 600 on this pitch and you couldnt get 10 wickets. now you are six down for 159. Accept the inability like a gentleman..

My only question to SL fans is where else does SL win test matches except for SL ? When was the last time SL won a match in Australia, England or SA ? I am sure it must be some 10-20 yrs back. The fact of the matter is SL is a tiger at home & lamb outside. How else would you justify that so called talented player Jayawardene averages 37 abroad & 67 at home ? I think just hold on for a while. Indian team & Indian batsmen have won matches everywhere in the world for a while now. SL has only 1 match winner in their ranks - Murali & if i may say history will always question his bowling arm. The bending of rules to accomodate the bent arm of Murali is a disgrace for cricket.

Agree with Ranga, Sanjay started off by saying that India had a better balance in their side, after day one he said that India looked the better team, after day two he said Sri Lanka can't loose and that pitch was conducive to batting and after day three this gem ! 'Indian Batsman lacked confidence', I wonder what next. Sanjay a mark of a good analyst is a)to be unbiased b)ability to look at all factors - in this case, the teams, the pitch, the toss etc. Its easy for anyone to arrive at a conclusion with the benefit of hindsight!
